Many professions have a certification process to identify those with the qualifications to perform their job at a professional level. In the photography industry, we have a certification process as well. It’s not a requirement for photographers, but it is a designation you can use to find a highly skilled professional. Very few attempt to earn their certification because of the rigorous requirements involved. The Professional Photographic Certification Commission currently recognizes less than 2,000 Certified Professional Photographers (CPP).

One of my personal goals for 2012 was to earn my Certified Professional Photographer designation. Since anyone with a camera can claim they are a professional photographer, I really wanted to set the bar higher for myself. Being a professional photographer should mean more than just having a business name and a website. When one chooses a professional in any industry they should expect a higher quality experience and service from a trained, knowledgeable individual. I sought certification as part of my commitment to my craft and my desire to be able to offer my best to those that trust me to document the most important milestones of their lives. My studio strives to exceed our client’s expectations and seeking certification was just one more way to demonstrate my level of skill, and ultimately, my commitment to our clients.

Earning your CPP involves completing testing to measure your artistic and technical competence. Applicants must complete a two hour written examination composed of questions from a bank of 6,000 about necessary photographic skills. The second phase of the assessment of your skills requires you to submit a recent portfolio of images, meeting very specific lighting and posing requirements, for evaluation by the commission. The image review segment is the most intimidating because you must prove that you can apply your knowledge of photography and create images that are certifiably professional in artistry and skill. Certification must be renewed on a periodic basis, ensuring continuing confidence in the professionalism of Certified Professional Photographers.

The end result is that Vanessa G. Photography is now a studio with distinction. A place you can feel confident in hiring a truly experienced professional. A studio you can be sure to create custom portrait artworks for you and your family that are authentic, modern, and beautiful…and technically correct…and well designed. When was the last time you had a portrait taken of you and your mother? Or you with your children? If you’re a mom like me, then you probably spend most of your time being the one behind the camera. Very few images exist of me with my boys and I do this sort of thing for a living. How sad is that? So for Mother’s Day this year, I decided I wanted a simple portrait of me with each of my sons. I want to remember us at this age. How we are together right now. I want them to have some memory of us together that will last a lifetime. Looking at myself, I see the lines, the needs-a-hair-cut, the freckles and all the little things I’m not particularly found of about my face. But more importantly, I see my sweet boy loving me for just a moment with his big beautiful grin. And that moment captured for us is priceless. Because I can probably count on my hands the number of images we have of just the two of us, and of those few, I don’t think there is one that came from my cell phone camera that captured his great smile. So I offer this opportunity to you. In honor of Mother’s Day, I had my mom come out to the studio and have a quick portrait made with me. I also had my husband and his sister come out to take a portrait of them with their mom too. We moms love our children. It deserves to be captured from time to time. We deserve to be in the pictures too!

Me and my Noah. He’s two years old. His Daddy helped me out with this one!

Paula, our Office Manager, with her daughter Sarah.

My dear husband with his mom.
